Tell Me The Story

- The Carpenter

by Alex Macdonald

These stories originate from the author’s story-preaching to his congregation. To Christians they are very familiar Gospel stories, but here they are told in a fresh way giving us a different view of the various happenings. They are each told from the viewpoint of a participant or observer and the link is that they are remembering what they have seen. They are telling the stories to a Centurion in the army of the governor of Syria who wants answers to various questions still unanswered from the time of King Herod. The Centurion has become fascinated with the stories of Jesus he is hearing all around him, and sets out to find the main players and hear what they have to say. You can read this book at one sitting, but a slower read gives time to ponder on the unfamiliar angles of the re-telling. A worthwhile read for all ages.

The Bible in Cockney

- Well bits of it anyway

by Mike Coles

In 1960 the Religious Education classroom was liable to be equipped with 36 copies of the Authorized Version of the Bible, and a significant proportion of the lesson was likely to be spent in translating Jacobean English into the (then) present-day. However, soon Carl Burke's "God is for Real, Man", Bernard Miles's "God's Brainwave" and perhaps Kit Calvert's Wensleydale, or your own local dialect version of well-known passages brightened up the lesson. And then the standard homework would be "Re-tell this parable in a modern setting, in dialect if you wish." But here it is the teacher who has rewritten the Dicky Bird, and I fear the RE lesson will again have to begin with translation - back! Inclusion of the crucifixion account is in my view bad taste. For the rest though, while I have little lemon and lime for this rookery as a serious piece of Dunkirk, yet as after-Lilley&Skinner entertainment - turtle dove it!

The Book of God

- The Bible as a Novel

by Walter Wangerin

Originally published in 1996, now re-issued yet again, and very welcome it is too.
Because it is described as a novel, it appears in the Fiction section, but it is hardly that! This is the Bible told as a story, starting with Genesis and on through the Old and New Testaments. I first read this book when it came out in hardback, and was hooked. Because the story moves quickly from generation to generation, I gained a greater understanding of how the Old Testament fits together. The Story of the New Testament too, is told with a great deal of imagination, but in no way, does it detract from the Bible. Well worth reading and lending to friends! - My review as written in 2001.
This book made a great impression upon me at that time, and memories of it have remained fresh since that reading. I welcome the chance for more people to enjoy it, and learn from it. It is no wonder that it is already a 'best seller'. Highly recommended.

The Centurion’s Wife

- Acts of Faith: Book One

by Davis Bunn & Janette Oke

These fictional re-telling of Biblical stories often affect me quite deeply, and this one especially so. Jesus has been crucified and Pontius Pilate and his wife Procula are both very disturbed as a result. Pilate because he fears a revolt in the territory he governs, Procula because of her recurring dream of the dead prophet and her headaches. The story revolves around their separate ways of obtaining the truth. Pilate uses Alban the Centurion in charge of the garrison at Capernaum in Galilee and Procula, Leah, a so called niece of Pilate’s, who is a servant in Pilate’s household despite her high birth. This is complicated by Alban being promised Leah as a wife if he fulfils Pilate’s bidding. Leah gets no say in the matter.
Both Alban and Leah separately obey their orders and in doing so learn of the follower’s of Jesus’ belief, that he has risen from the dead.
As the story unfolds you can almost smell and hear the atmosphere in the Jerusalem streets, the animals, the people: feel the quiet peace that surrounds the believers and the arrogant brashness of the Romans.
A thoroughly good story that gives you a real feel for what it was like at that time.

The Damascus Way

- Acts of Faith Book 3

by Davis Bunn & Janette Oke

I have so enjoyed this series. Each one I have thought could not be bettered, but I was wrong, my enjoyment has increased with each book. The historical research that lies behind any fictional re-telling of Bible times, means you can learn a great deal, and this is certainly so with this trilogy. The fear among the Christians in Jerusalem after the stoning of Stephen and the appearance of Saul with his mission to destroy them is palpable, and that fear follows them as many flee the city into remote parts of Judea and Samaria. Here they find others of like persuasion who are willing to help them, and in this story we follow Stephen’s widow and child to a new life at a trading post on the edge of the desert. The description of a journey through a sand storm in this desert and many other incidents in the story help us to understand more fully, the background to this part of the Gospel story.
We meet with many familiar characters and new story lines and characters are introduced which makes for a thoroughly good read.

A boxed set of these books is available for £25, ISBN 978-0-764-29509-6

The Day the Sky Opened

by Andrew R Guyatt

This book arrived on a Saturday morning, and I had finished it by late that night! We all know the bare bones of the story that is all we get in the Bible. Genesis, chapters six to nine, tells of Noah and the Ark but we don’t often go further to the end of this story. Andrew Guyatt has used New Testament texts and a great deal of research and imagination to weave a very realistic re-telling of the whole story. This insight taught me so much and had me gripped right through to the last page, then I picked up my Bible and re-read the story there with opened eyes. Very enjoyable, exiting drama throughout.
