The Winds of Autumn- Seasons of the Heart - Book Twoby Janette Oke Originally published in 1987. In this second book of the series Josh is growing up and the world is not the easy place we hope it will be. The book faces up to the challenge of a God who sometimes allows things to happen we would rather he did not. Either I have become used to the language or it is being ironed out but reading gets easier and yes I have to read the next in the series. Review by Hilary Morgan (30/10/10) |

The Wizard’s Giftby Mark Townsend I picked up this book in some trepidation, having been put off by the title and recommendations by Mark’s fellow Magicians. I need not have worried, once I had started to read I was carried along with the story, which contains a powerful message of wisdom and self recognition. In alternate short chapters we learn of the life journey of two separate people Sam and Jane: each has problems that need outside help to resolve. Sam turns to the ‘Wizard’, Jane to an older woman, and as the story evolves Sam and Jane’s paths cross and both find peace and fuller understanding. Mark is a Church of England priest and a member of the Magic Circle, who has left parish ministry to Minister in a new way, reaching out to those who would not otherwise listen to a Priest. Waking Lazarusby T L Hines Jude died and came back to life again three times and the publicity this generated was unbearable and he ‘disappeared’ to live the life of a recluse in a distant town. Working as a Janitor in the local school under the name of Ron Gress, he was known to the people around as an ‘odd-ball’ who hardly spoke, yet on a night out drinking, he fathers a son on whom he dotes, and has a distant relationship with the mother, who has since become a Christian. A tangled web for a start, but with the recurring disappearance of children from surrounding towns we are drawn into an evil situation that only Jude can resolve. A gripping read and a real page turner. Review by Mary Bartholomew (24/07/07) |

Walking on Broken Glassby Christa Allan Leah is a woman who is struggling to deal with a difficult marital relationship – especially in the bedroom. As things move from bad to worse, she deals with it by emotionally divorcing herself from the situation by means of alcohol. This is where it becomes a story of hope and redemption. Into this bleak situation God sends a Christian friend to encourage her to deal with the problem as well as pray for her. As their lives progress, we are moved by how Leah starts to trust God from day to day and how God changes her life and starts work in her husband. WARNING: Tissues may be needed. When the Acacia Bird Singsby James O’Halloran Having read Remember Jose Inga by the same author, I was so impressed that I asked to see this book. Set in Southern Africa it tells the story of a family trying to escape from the RENAMO soldiers in Mozambique. In a heartrending situation the elderly Father of the family sends the younger generations away with the hope that the family will live on into the future. The story of their journey in an attempt to reach extended family in South Africa portrays the sufferings of so many refugees. Facts we so readily forget when they become unwanted immigrants. James O’Halloran has worked in South America and Africa, his stories tell a truth we need to know, but it is not comfortable reading. Review by Mary Bartholomew (28/07/04) |

When the Lion Roarsby Diann Mills An imaginative mix of characters gives this novel its particular appeal. The story of war torn life in Southern Sudan is told sensitively and graphically. An American Doctor and an Arab Christian Pilot find their lives woven with that of a Commander in the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army. Exciting, moving, a gripping read, with a strong sense of the redemptive power of God’s love. Unfortunately the background to this story is very plausible, and only too possible.
