Children: Easter, All ages

VeggieTales: ‘Twas the Night Before Easter

Created by Phil Vischer & Mike Nawrocki

Larry Cucumber is excited about chocolate eggs and jelly beans and other Easter treats, so Bob Tomato talks about the real lesson to be learnt at Eastertide and presents a story to explain what he means with all the usual vegetable characters.
Marlee Meade a reporter in Crisper County thinks she is helping others by re-opening a run-down theatre and putting on a show, but it goes spectacularly wrong and the only reason the audience come is to hear Cassie Cassava sing; and the only reason Cassie Cassava is there is because she has been tricked! When Marlee realises her mistake and she and her friends try to get to the sun-rise service Easter morning, they have an unexpectedly exciting journey as their bus is pulled through the deep snow by the robot rabbit from Marlee’s show. (I loved this part and watched it over again!)
Marlee learns that you don’t need to put on an impressive show to help people, just help them with whatever they need. As Tim says, the important thing is ‘Remembering what Jesus did for us and trying to be like him’.
My grandson spotted the DVD on my desk and immediately asked to watch it; he’s IT savvy and watched the various bonus pieces too. Veggietales are always a hit with youngsters of all ages.

Simon and the Easter Miracle

- A Traditional Tale for Easter

Retold by Mary J. Joslin illustrated by Anna Luraschi

A traditional folktale based on the Biblical telling of Simon of Cyrene who was forced by Roman Soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus. The story is told in an interesting narrative that spurs the turning of the pages. One tiny bit of the tale jarred for me and that was the one time Jesus spoke and gave a reply to Simon’s question. I was left thinking ‘Would Jesus have used those words? Anyhow later when the story opened up more, a connection to what He had said became apparent. I enjoyed the colours and style of the illustrations. A book to be enjoyed as many times as it is picked again from the book shelf.

The Three Trees

- A Traditional Folktale

Retold by Elena Pasquali, illustrated by Sophie Windham

The Three Treesis a colourful, eye catching book retelling a traditional folk tale that embraces the Easter Story.
The tale tells of three trees on a hillside and of the dreams they have for the things they would do. The dreams come true but not in the ways expected and each of their rough timber ends up playing a part in the life and death of Jesus.
A delightful story.

My Little Easter Story

by Christina Goodings illustrated by Claudine Gévry

The story of the adult Jesus told simply for its audience. I particularly liked the way the Lord’s Supper was explained in such an understandable way for the reader.
Vivid colours and quaint illustrations add to the allure of the book.

My Very First Easter Story Sticker book

by Lois Rock illustrated by Alex Ayliffe

My Very First Easter Story Sticker Book carries a brightly coloured and child friendly cover and the inside pages offer more of the same. The stickers are accessed from the middle of the book and the places where they fit are shown as plain coloured shapes in order to simplify the finding process. The Easter story is told simply for accessibility of the intended age group. And the inclusion of a question at the bottom of the core pages of the book allows the reader to reflect generally within their every day frame of reference. The back pages of the book give an outline of the life of Jesus in words and pictures. Finally, the last page gives a feel good prayer for Easter in rhyming verse.

On Easter Day in the Morning

by Vickie Howie and Honor Ayres

I wish I had this book when my children and grandchildren were young! One of the very best I have seen for this age group. Repeated phrases such as pit-pat, pit-pat or left-right left-right, make this book a joy to read to a little one and they will, soon be joining in. The story starts with Jesus preaching and teaching and meeting with the little children, then moves on to the crucifixion which is not glossed over, but handled gently and sensitively before bursting into the joy of Easter and the resurrection. Aided by the illustrations, this is an excellent re-telling and highly recommended.
