The Very Worried Sparrowby Meryl Doney illustrated by Gaby Hansen A charming short story sympathetically illustrated in pastel colours of a Very Worried Sparrow. He worries about just about everything! He worries about food, he worries about flying; he worries about the sparrow hawk, he worries about the weather: until one evening he meets a gently spoken turtle dove who explains to him about the Great Father who made and knows all things. Next morning he found his voice and sang with joy. This is a story little ones will ask for time and time again. Review by Mary Bartholomew (20/12/09) |

Veggietales: Happy Together!Created by Phil Vischer & Mike Nawrocki The ‘ISBN’ is purely for our data base, to order from TMD quote code 820669 Three short stories for the price of one, linked together by Larry the Cucumber and Bob Tomato with the usual talk and silly songs. A Story of Friendship – Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler, with Bob Tomato as the unappreciated Dr Watson A Story of Family – The Grapes of Wrath about forgiving and being forgiven A Story of Faith – Esther: The Girl Who Became Queen, the Bible story as you have never seen it before! I agree with what it says on the cover,’ Over 80 Minutes of Happiness’ which could easily be broken into ‘short bites’ for younger children. Review by Mary Bartholomew (02/12/11) |

Veggietales: It’s a Meaningful Lifeby Created by Phil Vischer & Mike Nawrocki Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato set out to answer Maggie’s question in this VeggieTale. Maggie has not been chosen for a part in the school play and now doesn’t feel very important; she asks ‘What shall I do?’ The Veggie cast set out to tell a story that will help. Stewart Green (Larry the Cucumber) is nick-named the green machine and is an up and coming player of American football with dreams of leaving his home town to join a famous team. A serious injury on the field dashes his hopes of fame and makes another member of the team, Monty Bumble, famous instead. Poor Stewart, he stays at home, marries his childhood sweetheart and has a family. He still loves his football and coaches a team of local children while managing his father’s toy train factory, but he still hankers after the career he lost to another. 15 years after his accident, his life is rocked when Marty Bumble, now rich and famous, comes home to Rockwell with big ideas to change the town to suit his far-fetched ideas. The toy train factory is failing and Stewart hits rock bottom – then along comes the ‘What If’ Express and it is not till then that Larry realises the worth of what he has. Some touching scenes, some ridiculous scenes and some thought provoking scenes all add up to the usual fun DVD that children (and adults too!) will enjoy. VeggieTales: Larry Boy and the Rumor WeedCreated by Phil Vischer & Mike Nawrocki Originally produced in 2001 and recently re-issued as a classic, the ‘ISBN’ is purely for our data base, to order from STL quote code 820279 Rumour, spelt the American way of course, but the story is spot on for any culture. As the ‘Rumor Weed’ says, ‘A tiny little story is all I need.’ One little slip by Larry-Boy creates a ‘rumor weed’ (gloriously illustrated) and one misunderstood remark from Alfred, Larry-Boy’s butler, when he gives a talk at the local school and makes a remark from which two youngsters get the wrong idea, start a series of events that are highly entertaining but at the same time convey a serious truth. I watched this a couple of weeks ago, but due to pressure of work have only just managed to write this review. I can still vividly see in my minds eye, the whole story. Hopefully young people will also remember this and heed its message. Excellent. Review by Mary Bartholomew (31/05/11) |

VeggieTales: Lessons From the Sock DrawerCreated by Phil Vischer & Mike Nawrocki The ISBN is purely for our data base, to order from STL quote Code 311169 This is a collection of short VeggiTales supposedly pulled out of a sock drawer as Bob and Larry try to help a sad young lad who has lost his hamster. The overall message is that from proverbs 17:22, ‘A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing.’ You certainly smile as you watch the many crazy Veggie characters enact the stories. VeggieTales: Little House That Stood (Also Good Egg of Gooseville)Written by Cory Edwards and Eric Newman Little House That Stood is a delightful mixture of parable and fairy story, with the message that faith among other things needs to be built on strong foundations. Three little pigs arrive in Cabbageville and order new houses from three different builders. Two of these builders have very odd ideas about building with inevitable results. This story is followed by the usual silly song, this time Happy Tooth Day utterly ridiculous but little ones will love it. Good Egg of Gooseville the short film to finish is an imaginative tale based on the nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty, but nothing like you have ever heard it before and with its own strong message of helping others. I love these DVDs as can be seen from previous reviews. This is as good as all the others. Highly recommended. Review by Mary Bartholomew (20/03/13) |
