A Way Through the Wilderness- Experiencing God’s Help in Times of Crisesby Paula Gooder This is a five session course for those desiring to explore their faith at greater depth. Paula Gooder is an experienced practical theologian who uses all her skills to encourage greater comprehension of the Biblical text, and this series, based on Isaiah 40, is meticulously structured to achieve that end. Yet it can be delivered by any member of a group – her guidance is enabling and reassuring. Each session offers a plan that is helpful but not restrictive, looking to the experiences of other group members to open their own windows of understanding. It is a course which groups may want to repeat in order to reap the greatest reward in Experiencing God’s Help in Times of Crisis, the book’s subtitle. I warmly recommend it. What is Contextual Bible Study?- A Practical Guide with Group Studies for Advent and Lentby John Riches John Riches outlines the use of Contextual Bible Study in different projects mainly in Scotland during the last few years. Two facilitators work with a group through a pre-determined passage of scripture with pre-determined questions. The participants are encouraged to apply the study to modern situations. However it does not appear that the historical context or the theological background are seriously outlined or discussed. Therefore creating a situation where a liberal theology emerges. In addition the studies have been used for political and social action. An example of this is the holding of a Bible study outside Faslane Trident submarine base. The book does raise the issue of how we can make the Bible more relevant to people today, but there is the need to remember that the Bible is God’s word. Review by Bob Stoneham (05/02/11) |

What’s So Amazing About Grace- Small Group Editionby Philip Yancey For small groups, Bible studies, retreats, or personal use, this is excellent. If you know Philip Yancey’s writing and have read his book What’s So Amazing About Grace, you will not be surprised to learn that this is compulsive viewing. I watched this on my own on my computer monitor, and found I could only take a session at a time; it gave me so much to think about. The Participants Guide is full of pertinent questions that prevent you from sidestepping any of the issues raised. And there are many issues raised! Each study concentrates the mind on a particular issue, giving plenty to work through, then suggesting a Book of the Week, further reading and Bible references. A course that needs commitment with 'a lot to get your teeth into' on a subject that affects the vast majority of us. Don't worry if members of the group are not able to read the recommended books, the writers of the course say they will at least get an idea of the key issues addressed.
