Journey to Bethlehem
- An Advent Calendar for All the Family
by Roger Langton
Folded to A4 size but opening out to form a landscape on which are doors to open throughout December. On the back of the calendar are the full words for each door and you will find a shorter version of them on the back of each door facing the picture within. Turn the folds of the landscape and you will find suggestions for retelling the story with different age groups and for using the calendar for prayer and related activities. Very different from a secular calendar with its chocolates attached and hardly a hint of the Bible story. This is Christmas as the Bible tells it and used well, can involve all the family.

- A Family Resource: Stories and activities for the Advent and Christmas Season.
by Lyn Chambers, Kay Warrington, Nia Catrin Williams
Based on the Bible readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, the book suggests ways in which children can engage creatively with the story at home, or in midweek groups and clubs, by exploring themes from the Gospels and preparing for the DSunday worship of their local church. This is achieved using very simple visual items, including a story cloth and card figures, to give an ongoing focus and bring the story to life. Publisher A photocopiable resource for use year after year as there is provision for Years A, B & C. In BRF’s customary thorough way, this resource can be used following the guidance given in the sure knowledge that everything has been tried and tested and found good. That still leaves scope for using the resource in ways to suit your local need. Whether used daily or weekly through advent, children and adults will learn and enjoy through this way of telling the familiar story. I even sang through some of the songs to myself – just to test that the words really did fit, and of course they did!

Pre-school children will love this simple story and adults will appreciate the information at the start of the book that will enable them to explain where the shrew and the tortoise lived.
Small is just that! A small shrew who is woken from his cosy sleep by a bright star shining into his eyes. He climbs onto a nearby rock to get a better view, but it is not a rock but a friendly tortoise who helps Small to understand what is happening, but not before Small gets it all wrong. At last Small stops rushing around and listens while his friend explains that the best Christmas present we can give God is ourselves!
