Papa Panov’s Special Day
Retold by Mig Holder, Illustrations by Julie Downing
This is a new edition of a timeless classic folk tale familiar to many generations and presented here for a new generation of children. ‘It’s Christmas Day, and Papa Panov, the lonely old shoemaker, is waiting for a special visitor. Things don’t turn out at all as he had expected….’ The illustrations fit the mood of the story perfectly and the words are just right. A lovely book.

e-mail: Jesus @ Bethlehem
by Hilary Robinson, Illustrated by Anthony Lewis
‘Let’s imagine that Jesus was born today’, these are the opening words of this delightful book. With few words, on pages with pictures that perfectly portray the story, the author and illustrator echo the original Christmas story until the last page when they remind us that everything Jesus taught and gave us two thousand years ago remains the same today.

The Christmas Story
Retold by Lois Rock with illustrations by Diana Mayo
This is a small format hardback for 5 – 11 year olds. The text is faithful to the original gospels of Luke and Matthew, the illustrations enhancing the retelling. A delightful gift book for any child, to remind them what Christmas is really about.

Christmas Moccasins
Written and Illustrated by Ray Buckley
A tale with a happy ending, but several strands of un-written issues between the lines, that could be taken up by a child when and where appropriate. I read it through in moments, but have been back to it several times although surrounded by other books awaiting attention. It is that sort of book, memorable. The illustrations are a perfect foil for the words, do ask to see it.

Saint Nicholas - The Story of the Real Santa Claus
Retold by Mary Joslin, Illustrated by Helen Cann
This is a story to be read year after year as Christmas comes round again and we need to be reminded of the example that St Nicholas of Myra showed us by his kindness and generosity to a poor family. Helen Canns particular style of illustration fits Mary Joslin’s retelling to make a lovely book.
