Mixing it up With...The Simpsons - 12 Sessions on faith for 9-13s
by Owen Smith
The Simpsons... love them or loath them Bart, Homer, Lisa, Marge and Maggie Simpson are facts of life and anti-heroes for a generation and this resource makes the best of them. Starting with Ned Flanders and the OTT view of goody Christians we look at what it really means for God to love us, then on to Itchy & Scratchy for the consequences of Sin, Homer and Do-nuts for temptation and on, make this a great resource and its possible that even older groups would quite enjoy these studies as well! Well written, great modern resource.
This is part of an excellent series of Resources for the 9-13 age range, aimed particularly at the peripherally churched, it is great stuff. Each resource starts with a great introduction that covers the essentials of Children’s Work first and then looks at why this particular subject is being used. The handouts are photocopiable and the sessions are easy to follow for any leader.

Mixing it up With... Harry Potter - 12 Sessions on faith for 9-13s
by Owen Smith
This title dealing with Harry Potter is an essential tool for any youth/children’s work team because regardless of where your church stands or what your personal belief on the subject is, Harry Potter is a core character to our youth. The resource suggests using film clips, but it would be possible to use it without. Each study focuses on a larger morality issue as dealt with in the Potterverse and the key bible passage that it pertains to, and it does it well. The comparisons are spot on, the discussions great. This is a great resource.

50 Sketches About Jesus - Great Ideas series
by David Burt
Part of Kingsway's 'Great Ideas' series, the clue is in the title with this book! 50 sketches which centre around the person and work of Jesus, fully indexed by subject, category and scripture, and packed with ideas ripe for the picking! 'Beef stew without dumplings' is an entertaining portrayal of the story of Mary and Martha, 'Loadsalove' provides a challenging look at the nature of real love from 1 Corinthians 13, and 'Feeding the Five Million ' is an original look at Jesus' miracle feeding of the five thousand guaranteed to have you squirming in your seat! Some of the cultural references are now a little outdated, which is potentially limiting, although with a bit of imagination, most could easily be adjusted (indeed some sketches make specific provision for this). It's also worth bearing in mind that some sketches will require more preparation than others, but there is something here to suit groups at every level. Enjoy!

More Tween Bible Puzzles - Another Years Worth of Fun
Writer/Editor Marcia Stoner
Tweenagers (essentially 8-12 year olds) are a challenging group to work with, wanting to distinguish themselves from the kids, but not yet old enough to join the teenagers. This book is *not* going to provide for your every need: definitely a case of 'does what it says on the tin', it provides photocopiable activity sheets on various themes. If that's the kind of thing your group is into, this is a great resource, packed with word games, blanks to fill, puzzles, codes, etc. If you're looking for starter activities which are serene, don't generate mess, and essentially keep them all relatively quiet for five minutes, head for this book. Those who prefer a more energetic, game-based approach will need to look elsewhere for inspiration!

Mixing it up With...Football - 10 Sessions on faith for 9-13s
by Owen Smith
This is probably more a Boys Only resource, though not solely so, and certainly one that will work very well with any group of lads. Using football to work through the Ten Commandments and church life - after all, its all about Team work! Is an excellent idea and these 12 studies are well thought out and presented. I loved the one using footballers really high salaries to address the issue of Money and how we should relate to it. The penny prayers exercise is fantastic. This would work well in many contexts and with many diverse groups.

50 Ready to Use Assemblies - For Primary and secondary Schools
by David Burt
This is one book I will be keeping on my own book shelf, rather than donating it to school resources! It contains excellent drama scripts for use in primary and secondary school assemblies and all the commentary needed to make the message clear. My secondary students thoroughly enjoy rehearsing and performing these scripts.
