A Youth Worker’s tale

by Steve Tilley

A quick and amusing read. I’d put it on my book shelf. By offering a realistic and fun look at the thoughts and events of a fictional youthworker ‘Trudge’, the writer asks good provocative questions about a youthworker’s lifestyle and practice without being judgemental. The book contains a simple study guide that questions some of the decisions Trudge makes, and asks whether you would do the same. OK it asks the basics, but now and then shouldn’t we allow ourselves to be questioned? It’s a worthwhile and easy read.

Young People + Mission

- A Practical Guide

Edited by Alison and David Booker

This is part one of a series of books which have been commissioned by Church House Publishing to explore the themes of the Church of England National Youth Strategy and are aimed at Youth Workers and leaders who are seeking professional qualifications in this area of work. The contributors are all experienced youth workers and give a breadth of teaching which is full of hints and tips, practical help, guidance for resources, and real life case studies. The mission field for youth is sometimes neglected and treated instead as an add-on to the work in clubs and societies. This book underpins the value of treating young people to work with God in building his kingdom here on earth and tapping the resources and skills of young people. Youngsters work not only in church environments but also in the wider world and to take their mission based belief to others is a vital area of their ministry. As a resource for teachers and workers this series should prove of great value.

Young People + Worship

- A Practical Guide

Edited by Mark Montgomery

This is the next book in the series from Church House Publishing exploring themes of National Youth Strategy. It is not a book for young people, but their leaders, for those who seek some alternative routes to planning and leading worship, always a difficult area, I feel with young people. Many young people have to endure “family services” which are aimed at them but leave them cold; this book connects the Sunday theme and service with what happens for the rest of the week. It also opens a debate about setting aside different days and services for the young, a change from the norm but emphasising the difference of style and content that young people may need to relate to God. Young people do not want to dumb down God but treat their style of worship as a serious alternative. This book gives plenty of resources, ideas, practical hints and tips and case studies of items that have succeeded and some that haven’t. Moreover the book gives us the chance to review what is happening in our neck of the woods and seeing if it is sensible to try something new; I challenge you to read this book carefully and try something different!

Youth A Part

- Young people and the church

By General Synod Board of Education

Youth A Part looks at how young people relate to the Church of England. Looking at youth culture; a theology of youth work; youth spirituality and worship; building relationships; how youth workers can best be recruited, supported and trained; examples of good practice and new ideas to challenge all those who see that work with 11-25s is vital to the Church’s future. If you have a youth work in your church, especially if you have a youth worker then I recommend this book for you. The report clearly illustrates that of course young people are spiritual and that many have turned away and know nothing of institutional forms of Christianity. A good report, even if it’s content has been known by many youth workers for the past 10 years! Readable, but you will need time to digest all the information and to make use of it.

Youth Ministry

- A Multi-Faceted Approach

by Sally Nash

In this insightful and eminently practical book vivid metaphors are used to define the multi faceted roles of today’s youth workers. The contributors are past and present staff and students of CYM – the Centre for Youth Ministry.
The introduction states its objectives very clearly, ‘This book seeks to equip you to undertake a range of roles within whatever sort of youth ministry you are doing, helping you to become more effective in your work.’ It is unashamedly God-focused, emphasising the importance of the part played by the youth leader’s own faith and sets out to encourage reflective practitioners. To this end questions for reflection are offered at the end of each chapter and a particularly useful resource for this is to be found on pp. xviii and xix of the introduction.
Case studies are frequently and effectively used to illustrate the points made, I particularly appreciated the one in chapter 3 by Simon Davies. This uses the metaphor of ‘visionary architect’ and offers an excellent example of the use of the strategic planning process through the use of a case study.
All too often books such as this abound in theory with little practical resources or guidelines. However, in Youth Ministry the reader will find sound practical guidelines alongside the theory, as in chapter 6 ‘Party Planner’ by Jean Harper. Here we find some useful advice on how to plan a celebration event with and for young people.
I believe that this book will both encourage and equip youth leaders in their ministry and could well prove to be a seminal resource for future training courses.

Youth Work after Christendom

by Jo and Nigel Pimlott

This is a very helpful consideration of youth work today and a much needed guide. Particularly useful is the exploration of HUP (homogeneous unit principle), which will be useful elsewhere. I love the end about paradox. I think that word opens so many doors and the observations so true and advice helpful. I wrote Grove Paradox in the Gospel and would love to write more about that subject as a means of not only coping about questions of faith, but in finding faith in the first place. So, a book which is most enlightening and full of illustrations about youth work, but with far more implications for other groups of people beyond that.
