Yorkshire Pudding

- *Presented by Adrian Plass with Bridget and others

by Adrian Plass

What can I say? How can you follow Adrian Plass with out sounding either self righteous or stupid – both of which he has something to say about!
Oh well, here goes.
These are very short pieces filmed on location in the Yorkshire Dales addressing all manner of subjects that can be used ‘to augment sermons and group or personal Bible studies, or as discussion starters.’
I have been privileged to hear Adrian and Bridget Plass a number of times, and so was delighted to have the opportunity to watch this DVD I was not disappointed. It was just a shame that I was on my own as each piece made me want to chip in with some thought of my own, which on reflection I decided was inappropriate and unnecessary. That is the joy of Adrian’s work – it makes you stop and think beyond your immediate response.
The background scenery in many of the pieces is absolutely glorious, and some of the outtakes made me laugh out loud, but don’t get me wrong, this is serious stuff presented to be inspirational, while at the same time as being enjoyed.
Will that do?
Now I am going to watch it again!

Your Church & The Law

- A Simple Explanation and Guide – Second edition

by David Parrott

This book is a great deal more accessible and useful than its title might suggest. Covering 22 key areas of ministry David Parrott’s guide provides a useful introduction to the legal implications of just about everything that is likely to cross a modern minister’s desk.
Each chapter begins with a scenario many of which will be readily recognisable to the experienced priest, and each chapter ends with invaluable recommendations for resources or web sites. In between the material presented is succinct, clear and easily digestible.
Inevitably books of this kind have their limits. From my own perspective for instance, there is virtually nothing on District Church Councils or Team Ministries. This means that the wise minister will also have other related books on their shelves such as the excellent yet more dense (and older) Practical Church Management. It is also unclear how this – second – edition compares with the first, which perhaps is a slight oversight.
Those caveats aside this is an excellent addition to any busy minister’s shelf and a fast route to many an answer on everything from marriage to faculties, safeguarding to the basics of charity law. It should at the very least reduce the number of calls to the local Registrar.

Your Point Being?

- 300 striking stories for speakers, preachers and teachers

by Graham H. Twelftree

The author says ‘..this book is designed to help other speakers find stories for effective communication……using (not reading out!)the stories …will require personalising , applying and retelling with conviction – or passion, to use a contemporary word.’ This is a work book, not a quick fix. The subjects for the stories are in alphabetical order and each piece is followed by the themes the piece addresses and relevant Scripture references. I have not seen another book quite like this, and am sure many speakers, preachers and teachers of the subtitle will find this book invaluable.
