Yes: A Positive Faith

by David L Edwards

There are many of us who have read at least one of David Edward’s books over the fifty years he has been a priest. His varied collection of books has included such notable tomes as ‘The Cathedrals of Britain’, ‘Christianity: the First 200 Years’ and many works on poetry and religion. His career sounds like a who’s who of ministerial appointments. His writing is gentle and thought provoking as he tries to put into context the relevance of Christian thought in this modern world. He says that this book will be his last and that it is probably the climax of his work. Yes- is the operative word: the positivism that Edwards has in explaining his belief and his knowledge of God in his life and ministry, is not an apology but a conviction. I hope it won’t be the last, as we need this sheer down to earth common sense attitude to develop our own thoughts as well in the future.

You Can’t be Serious!

- 12 Popular Reasons for Avoiding Jesus

by Michael Green

A radical reworking of You Must Be Joking published in 1976 by Hodder & Stoughton, You Can't Be Serious is a look at twelve arguments and excuses for not believing in God. Michael Green takes these arguments and explains, for the non-theologian, why they are unfounded even if convenient, and how we can tackle them in conversation. This is not a book for non-Christians. Rather it is a tool for those who wish to reach out, whether by the Jesus Video Project, Alpha or Christianity Explored, to others. Even if you are not involved in an outreach event, the book will help equip you to answer some of the arguments that meet you from non-Christian friends.

You Mean That Isn't In The Bible?

- Ten Popular Beliefs that Simply Aren't True

by David A Rich

This book is a laudable attempt to look afresh at some beliefs to which people might hold that aren't actually true; these include 'God helps those who help themselves', 'believers are God's co-pilots', 'God wants you to be rich' and the rather bizarre 'when we die we become angels'. David Rich bemoans the situation in many churches today where people only believe what their Pastors tell them, rather than studying the Bible themselves; however his own particular doctrinal positions (that he is a creationist, a fundamentalist, an evangelical and a Calvinist) are firmly behind much of his argument in this book which might limit its appeal to many readers as he makes little reference to differences in interpretation of various passages and that other views might have some validity. Many of his explanations I found unconvincing, even if I might agree with the overall concept, and his rather didactic style didn't seem congruent with his status as (apparently) a well-respected motivational speaker.

You’re Late Again Lord!

- The impatient woman’s guide to God’s timing

by Karon Phillips Goodman

Whatever you’re waiting for – to get a job or start a family, to sell a house or make a move, to gain more money or regain your health – it’s all under God’s very capable and completely loving control. That dreaded ‘waiting room’ is where He’ll teach you more and more of Himself if only you’ll let him. The author’s choice of bible quotes was really helpful and her ‘conversations’ with God made so much sense. I know I am one of many women who like to be in control of their lives at all times, and get distressed by waiting for other people, just as the author describes herself. I was able to relate to so much of what she describes in this book, and have hopefully learnt from what she has to say.
