A Week in the Life of MAF: - Mission Aviation Fellowship by Irene Howat The people who serve in MAF were asked to write diaries of a specific week in 2004, to give snapshots of their lives and work. The resulting book, put together by Irene Howatt, gives in almost overwhelming detail what MAF and it’s personnel get up to. There seems no area of need in the whole world that they do not serve, and not only with their flying and auxiliary work, but in the whole family’s involvement with the community in which they find themselves. I found that I needed to read this book in short bites, to give myself time to absorb what I was reading. It was well worth while, and I learnt so much; the geography and climate, the political situations, the different ways of life of the local people and so much more. When God Steps In - The Amazing Story of The Acre Gospel Mission by Victor Maxwell For someone who has a healthy ‘respect’ for giant spiders and deadly snakes I am forever grateful that I do not feel called to somewhere like the Amazon Basin. This book is the history of sixty five years of the Acre Gospel Mission to that region and is a thrilling account of the many ordinary people who have heard the extraordinary call and responded. Victor Maxwell’s readable account is not only an inspiration and a treasure for any one associated with the Amazon or a supporter through giving or prayer, but is a fascinating history of how mission has changed over the years. Windows into the World Church - Christ at Work in Africa, Asia and the Middle East by Barbara Butler A book like this can only be a glimpse of what is going on in the countries Barbara Butler has visited on her travels as Executive Secretary of Christians Aware. The Windows she opens are nevertheless very worthwhile eye-openers for Western Christians who know too little about their fellow believers and have even less understanding of the conditions in which they live out their faith. I found this book absorbing and uplifting at the same time as being humbled by many of the situations described. Review by Mary Bartholomew  (21/07/03)

Witnesses to Power - Stories of God's Quiet Work in a changing China. by Tetsunao Yamamori & Kim-Kwong Chan Told in their distinctive style by Chinese from many parts of China, these stories give westerners a glimpse of what is happening in the Christian church in China today. Some stories go back to the boxer tragedy in China, others tell it as it is now. All show that there is church growth that has produced huge congregations in some areas, and yet there are also tales of persecution, imprisonment, and cruelty. This book showed me my overwhelming ignorance of this land, a vast area hard for us to imagine, many languages, many races, many beliefs but one faithfull God whose Spirit is filling many people.
