The Westminster Cardinals- The Past and the Futureby Michael J Walsh Archbishop Vincent Nichols may have consulted this set of biographies of his predecessors at Westminster in order to learn about their backgrounds, characters, ways of leading and ministering to the people of the Archdiocese and to the Church in England and Wales. The development of the Catholic Church and its standing today is a reflection of these ten men, with their successes, failures, influence and effect on the countries' population at large. Necessarily, the author has to be selective in what is included; at times, there is an imbalance between the subjects' pre-Westminster years and their time in office. Also, he often goes into too much detail, at the cost of other aspects of their lives. Not all have had full scale biographies written about them (e.g. Cardinal Heenan) and the author was too early to benefit from Dr Hagerty's recent volume on Hinsley. Perhaps this collection of sketches will lead to full scale treatment for a number. Mr Walsh describes it as 'something of an instant book' (p. vii), but this does not excuse many errors of fact and other 'typos' - they go beyond being 'inadvertent'. His reputation is let down by carelessness and / or lazy proof reading. His and his publishers' purposes would be better served by a paperback. Review by J.Nicholas Latham (20/05/09) |

The Wild Bird Child- A Life of Amy Carmichaelby Derick Bingham In 1954, the practice of young female Hindus being ‘married to gods’ and sexually abused in temple rituals was outlawed throughout India. Amy Carmichael, who spent over 50 years protecting the victims of this abuse and calling for its prohibition, died three years earlier. Nonetheless, it was her work, as Bingham demonstrates, that forced the Indian authorities to confront the problem. She was a missionary and a social reformer, who instinctively sided with the weak and the oppressed. If Bingham’s writing occasionally suffers from a somewhat idiosyncratic style, it is at other times highly engaging and emotionally compelling. The editors have done us a service in collecting a varied and impressive variety of contributions. Frere was scholar, bishop and co-founder of the Community of the Resurrection – but there is so much more. Frere would seem to have taken to heart the maxim: ‘you can achieve a great deal if you are willing to allow somebody else to take the credit!’. Although some of his writing is considered controversial and has been criticised in Vatican circles, he remains a Catholic priest committed to his Church, while at the same time reaching out to people of all other faiths and of none. Wigglesworth- the Complete Storyby Julian Wilson I have often come across the name of Smith Wigglesworth in books, but apart from his being a remarkable man with an amazing Christian Ministry I knew nothing about him. This is an inspiring story of an uneducated man who with the support of his wife Polly led many people to faith. His preaching and teaching was recognised all over the world. A very encouraging book. Wigglesworth- The Complete Storyby Julian Wilson Suspend your disbelief and just read, learn and be amazed at what an uneducated man can achieve by following God’s guidance and acting in faith. Smith Wigglesworth 1859-1947 was not an attractive man but God does not judge by appearances, He knew that this was the right man to serve him at this particular time. ‘Wherever he ministered he sought to raise his listeners level of faith,..........and critical to building faith, he stressed, was to put faith into action’ (page 100) and this he did to his utmost. Despite his repetitious preaching, based solely on his knowledge of the Bible and no other reading or study, his charisma held the attention of congregations large- even huge – and small, and his particular gift was healing in the name of Jesus. Healing physical and mental conditions and even on occasion raising people from the dead. He travelled the world and this gruff Yorkshireman, one time plumber, was known more abroad that in the UK.
