A Taste of Hildegard

For me Hildegard Von Bingen and Elizabeth Ruth Obbard just automatically go together - Obbard's beautifully simple line drawings of the nun-contemplative are the essential companion in my mind to the rich and beautiful complexity that is Hildegard's mysticism and works.

In this little primer A Taste of Hildegard published to celebrate Hildegard being declared a Doctor of the Church we find a selection of passages from Hildegard's short work Scivias (scivias meaning 'know the Way') that have been chosen and illustrated by Obbard. These passages demonstrate her visions and mysticism well with their focus being on salvation. There is also a short and gentle overview at the beginning of the book on Hildegard and a mention of the other women Doctors of the Church.

This really is a lovely little primer and at only £5.95 it really does make for a very accessible introduction to Hildegard, or a lovely addition to any collection for those who already have a love of her work.

- An Extraordinary Life

First published in the UK, 1991, by Hodder and Stoughton, I read this book then and so enjoyed it that I gave it to a friend, and have often regretted it. Now a second chance to read it. At the time I knew little of this saint, but her story in this book made a great impression on me and has remained at the forefront of my mind through the years. The quote I used back then is that Shirley du Boulay ‘captures that compelling combination of down-to-earth humanity and profound enriching spirituality which is Teresa’s hallmark’. She tells the story of Teresa’s life from childhood to her death and after, in very readable detail,

Thérèse of Lisieux

Marie-Francoise-Therese Martin was born in 1873. Her last remaining sister died in 1959 and yet Therese was made a saint in 1925. It is an extraordinary story, retold by many over the years, but we owe a big thank you to Monica Furlong for writing this Biography with great sympathy yet keeping strictly to the facts, stripping away the sentimentality that had built up around this young girl. The result is an absorbing story, some parts of which it is hard to comprehend with our modern ways. The Saint’s own writings The Little Way and The Story of a Soul are complimented by knowing the circumstances in which they were written.

Long ago I read the 1969 edition of this title from Hodder and Stoughton and the impression it made remained with me all these years, so that I was only too willing to read it again in this new edition from David Cook.
Just the name John Pollock as author is a recommendation – I have several of his books on my shelves.
So much has been written about Paul, and there is a lively interest in him at the moment. John Pollock’s book tell his story as a biography, and in so doing he has had to conjecture what happened to Paul in periods where no records exist. These times are clearly set out and because they are written with a deep knowledge of the man, help to make the story complete.
While reading you feel as if you ‘know’ this man. You travel with him in imagination, suffer with him in his trials and rejoice in his tribulations.

- A Celebration of Holy Men and Women

This A Celebration of Holy Men and Women began as a series of articles in a magazine. Sr Wendy reflects on images of a selection of saints – not just paintings. As before, she brings out of the image what for her is its Christian content. In so doing we get the benefit of her insight into the image as a work of art. This is mostly helpful but sometimes frustrating. For example, Crivelli, an artist of texture, shows us St Thomas Aquinas, and Sr Wendy comments on the saints features, but the church he holds has clearly seen better days; the campanile has been repaired, plants grow out of the stonework, and some of the stones are damaged. Why?

The author’s organisation of extracts is a stimulating one, covering in part the history of the times, liturgical developments and progress in ethical thought (an especially important fruit of the Caroline’s endeavours) amongst many other topics.
