Christian Parent’s Toolkit
by Sarah Johnson
Many parents bemoan the fact that children don’t come with an instruction booklet, and the challenge of learning on the job. The fact that this book is titled a ‘toolkit’ for parents is refreshing and signifies that it is about resourcing and supporting as opposed to arming for battle! It doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but seeks to help parents try new ways of exploring the world with their children to reawaken spiritual awareness through shared family experiences both within and outside the home. It affirms parents who are conscious that they only have this time with their child, earnestly seeking to do the best they can and offers practical tips to help families to honour God and live out Christian values in ways that create family rituals and traditions that nurture faith and draw a family together. The inclusion of a kaleidoscope to the toolkit reminds the reader that the myriad of childhood phases create different landscapes in the relationship between parent and child, some more tranquil than others, but each to be appreciated for what it is and when all seems too much this book offers a host of other practical tools for the job.
Bear Grylls, the adventurer, former Blue Peter presenter and now Chief Scout, has written these words of wisdom that have influenced his own life and that he wants to pass on to all children as a ‘moving expression of a father’s love’.
Interspersed with delightful and witty cartoons by Charlie Mackesy there is so much wise advice here. Although addressed to his sons a daughter would do well to read them too, and act accordingly.
10 Lifesavers For Every Couple - Help and Hope When Your Relationship Hits a Rough Spot
by David Hawkins
Marital emergencies happen but are we prepared for them? Most marriages go through difficult times and a lot of marriages do not survive. This book looks at strategies or lifesavers as the author puts it, that are likely to help out in a crisis.
If we were physically ill we would be likely to get help, but if we are in a marital emergency we often don’t see the signs that lead to a breakdown in the marriage. This book gives good common sense practical advice to any couple whether they think they are in crisis or not. It is also a good guide to all of us in whatever relationships we encounter; treating our fellow human being with respect has always got to be top priority. Although it is written from a Christian perspective, it is done in a very low key way and I would have no difficulty in recommending it to both my Christian and non-Christian friends.
Perhaps it’s the age we live in with the constant bombardment from the media we receive that is so overtly sexual, but even though I knew this to be a book about the biblical perspective on love sex and marriage I was surprised at how restrained the book actually was in content.
This is not to say that this was unwelcome, but the title really belies the content of the book. The blurb does indicate that this is an exploration of Song of Songs, but I think I expected there to be more specific advice on the subject. Having said that, the book is essentially a series of meditations on pre-marriage relationships, the marriage and then life after the ceremony with a section of Song of Songs starting every chapter. Each chapter draws on the authors’ own experience and love of scripture to open our minds to the more general facets of the relationship between a man and woman. It is the literal interpretation of Song of Songs rather than the allegory between Christ and the Church.
One is left in no doubt that partners need to be honouring and caring of each other from the very beginning of a relationship through to the setting in of the mundane after a marriage of some years. It encourages us always to look for the good in each other, to solve difficulties quickly, to remain romantic and with this it is an uplifting read for any couple at whatever stage of life.

ISBN 978-0-764-20547-7
Each can be purchased separately.
I could have done with this when my four children were growing up and I shall pass my copies to the daughter with teenagers.
The CDs reflect much of what is written in the books, so that books or CD make a useful resource. CD and books together in this pack, are an even better resource, as we are all different and some prefer to read, others to listen and the main reason for Jim Burns work is to get the purity message across for many practical reasons as well as the obvious Biblical teaching.
