GoodBookStall Review:
A common charge among post-war historians was that the German hierarchy, particularly the Catholic, bowed under the Nazi threat and were indifferent to the horrors of the holocaust. This book by Doctor Frain puts matters straight and demonstrates conclusively that, far from appeasement, the Catholic Church confronted the evil of Nazism with courage and fearlessness, providing many martyrs in the process. The Pope spoke out strongly against Hitler (Albert Einstein praised him for this) and many hundreds of priests were murdered. Although writing as a Catholic in defence of his own Church, he recalls throughout the rôle played by Protestants in the opposition to Nazism, particularly Bonhoeffer, Barth and Niemöaut;ller. This is a well-researched book, challenging and thought-provoking. As David Alton says in the preface: “This book is also a challenge in our own lives and our own times to face up to the evils that confront us.”
