The Art of Allowing
The Breath in Meditation and in Life
by Louis Hughes OP
GoodBookStall Review:
This is an easy to read but deeply spiritual book. The author points out that in many ancient languages, such as Hebrew, Latin and Sanskrit, the word “breath” has the same meaning as “life”, “spirit” and “soul”. He then leads us to consider that our every breath is an ongoing and freely-given gift of God. He continues with the comforting thought that our last breath, that is our death, is simply the return of that gift, in other words our life, to its creator. In addition to its theological import, the book gives many simple-to-follow and effective ways of achieving mental and physical relaxation. There is also some helpful advice on the subject of meditation. Combining, as he does, Christian principles with insights derived from the eastern disciplines of yoga and tai-chi, together with reference to the teaching of Descartes, Louis Hughes has given us a slim volume with very wide appeal.
