GoodBookStall Review:
For each of the Sunday's set of scripture readings, and some 'Special Days',a reading from one of fourteen other religions, including 'Native Traditions', is supplied, the length varying from three lines to almost a page.
'The collective wisdom of our sacred writings is a heritage that belongs to all humankind...'. The author hopes that 'dialogue and cooperation' will be assisted, 'with greater affection for one another's paths and wisdom.’ ('Introduction', p. 7). These are laudable aims, so long as the danger of relativism is avoided, with the Christian Gospel being reduced to just another religion among many of equal value.
He does accept that 'Sometimes...the readings challenge or even contradict the Gospel lesson, allowing us to sit in the midst of a conversation between two traditions.' (p. 3), as well as their complementing the Christian Scriptures.
'Nostra Aetate', the 1965 Catholic teaching document on other religions, emphasises that what is good in the World comes from God. Used carefully by Christians and members of other Faiths, this book will achieve its aims.
