Tom’s Mother dies leaving him all alone as his father went off some time before. However he remembers something his Mother told him at the start of her illness, if he was ever in need, to go to Scrooby, there would be people there to help him. She also told him that from Gainsborough where they lived, he would need to go west and find The Great Road and that would take him to Scrooby.
With just the clothes he is wearing he sets off, finds the road and travels on. He gets so hungry that when he spies a basket of food left in the shade of a hedge, he is tempted to steal some and gets caught. By great good fortune he is rescued from the farmer’s wrath by a Mr Brewster and so starts an amazing adventure, sailing on the Mayflower to the new colonies across the ocean.
Tom Turner and his family are all imaginary, but the other people in the story really lived.
