GoodBookStall Review:
This collection of essays delves mainly into the controversy that was stirred up between the Latin and Greek Churches by the saint’s doctrine of the Holy Trinity and the filioque clause. The writers successively reveal areas of commonalty between Augustine and the Greek Fathers which perhaps were overlooked in the heat of later theological debate. The argument is made that Augustine’s subtle and extensive thought has often been confused with the more extreme positions taken up by those who saw themselves as his theological followers. There is much of interest here, particularly Andrew Louth’s superb insight into St Augustine the preacher and pastor. However, it is not a book for the non-specialist and requires significant theological background in the reader.
