GoodBookStall Review:
Over the last couple of decades there has been a quiet revolution going on in terms of accessible, good English translations of the Greek Fathers. There is still a great deal to do, but the work of publishers like St Vladimir’s Seminary Press and their Popular Patristics Series is certainly in the forefront of this revolution. This present offering is most welcome. Unfortunately, the figure of Mary, Mother of Christ, has been the occasion of a good deal of misunderstanding and prejudice between the Christian denominations over the centuries. These twelve orations and homilies, usually marking the great feasts for the Theotokos, or God Bearer, set out clearly the Eastern Orthodox thinking on her role in the salvation of all creation. In these terms, they are an excellent read for Christians of any denomination.
