A Biblical Guide to Love, Sex and Marriage

Perhaps it’s the age we live in with the constant bombardment from the media we receive that is so overtly sexual, but even though I knew this to be a book about the biblical perspective on love sex and marriage I was surprised at how restrained the book actually was in content.
This is not to say that this was unwelcome, but the title really belies the content of the book. The blurb does indicate that this is an exploration of Song of Songs, but I think I expected there to be more specific advice on the subject. Having said that, the book is essentially a series of meditations on pre-marriage relationships, the marriage and then life after the ceremony with a section of Song of Songs starting every chapter. Each chapter draws on the authors’ own experience and love of scripture to open our minds to the more general facets of the relationship between a man and woman. It is the literal interpretation of Song of Songs rather than the allegory between Christ and the Church.
One is left in no doubt that partners need to be honouring and caring of each other from the very beginning of a relationship through to the setting in of the mundane after a marriage of some years. It encourages us always to look for the good in each other, to solve difficulties quickly, to remain romantic and with this it is an uplifting read for any couple at whatever stage of life.
