GoodBookStall Review:
The appeal of this volume in the series Texts and studies in Reformation and Post-Reformation Thought would have been considerably widened had the author included the text of the confession. As it is, the reader must reconstruct the text from the often very detailed comments on its various articles dispersed throughout the book. The Belgic Confession is important because it is one of the oldest statements of the doctrine of the Dutch churches. For English readers it has a more particular interest since the ‘followers’ of Arminius challenged some of its articles, and an international synod was called to deal with the matter. This was the famous Synod of Dort 1618-1619, in which English delegates were full participants, and whose conclusions were to fuel the religious debates which ultimately contributed to the English Civil War.
