GoodBookStall Review:
I have heard of the Shakers but have never known anything about them. This book is woven around the story of Elizabeth and her younger brother and sister. It takes us into the life of a Shaker village when their father dies suddenly and they need to flee from the owner of their home who is intent on marrying Elizabeth despite her protestations. We learn, as does Elizabeth and her siblings, what life in a Shaker community involves. The Shakers do not turn anyone away but expect those who join them to conform to their pattern of life and worship. Life is not all smooth in the community; there are some very lovable characters but others who are harsh and stern in their attitudes towards the three. Then there is the trouble caused by Colton who seeks her out and tells the Elders that Elizabeth belongs to him and should be handed over, and of course there is Ethan, a handsome young ‘brother’.
