The Carousel Painter

by Judith Miller

GoodBookStall Review:
This tale is set in 1890. Not so long ago thought I, my father was born in 1880! But hopefully attitudes have changed in the years since then.
Carrington Brouwer, known as Carrie, has returned to the US from Paris where her family had moved some years before so that her father could pursue the career of a painter. Her Mother died and although acknowledged by his peers as an excellent artist, her father only earnt just enough money to keep them going. After his death, Carrie, now twenty-one, had just enough money for the voyage home a few clothes and a collection of her father’s paintings as mementos. She had become friends with Augusta, a rich young lady sent to Paris for the season, who had art classes with her father. Augusta had invited her to stay at her parent’s home – but unfortunately had not explained Carrie’s position to her social climbing mother.
The scene is set for problems all round and when Carrie is given the job of Carousel painter in the factory belonging to Augusta’s father, things get even more complicated.
