GoodBookStall Review:
For this book, Janette Oke sets her story in a time when men out west on the prairie lands of the USA are seeking wives; women and young girls in the UK and the rest of Europe are answering advertisements to supply that need. Kathleen is one of these girls. She is an orphan living with her harsh step-mother who treats her own children kindly and Kathleen she sends out to work and then expects her to do housework on her return. Kathleen is used to the poverty and depravity of London’s poorer streets and the chance of a new life draws her like a magnet. Donnigan is an upright and attractive young man living a lonely life on his successful prairie farm. The story tells of the trials and emotions of their first years together, not an easy time for either of them until they open up to each other and find they both yearn for a happy family life and something more – they are not sure what. As they start their family they also start to read the Bible and search for the peace they so desire.
