GoodBookStall Review:
This is a lovely book that goes through England and Wales looking at the remaining Collegiate Churches, that is to say churches that were originally built as part of a medieval college. Best to be clear here: a medieval college was not really a place of education, though they were the roots of modern secular colleges, but rather something similar to a monastery. This is what the first part of the book describes.
These beautiful churches and their Collegiate’s spanned from the Anglo-Saxon era right through to the 16th Century and the ones that remain are beautiful testaments and churches. This book includes 150 black and white photo's and each church then has a short but informative listing giving a brief overview of the setting, style and dynamic of the church. Definitely an essential book for anyone with an interest in Church Architecture, history and the heritage of our churches.
