GoodBookStall Review:
You know when you pick up a Philip Yancey book you are in for a good read and I am glad to say this is no exception.
As he travels around the world doing book signings, talking about the books he has written, he has found himself in a variety of situations and from these he shares a selection. First setting the scene and describing the people and places he has visited, the situations they find themselves in and how he has responded, then giving us the words of the talk he has been invited to give in that place. Places as diverse as Virginia Tec, USA, where there had been a massacre, to China, India, Cambridge, UK, and others, each inspiring different thoughts and needing to be addressed differently.
There are six of these experiences in this book, yet you feel that there are many more he could tell about and I wished he had: I could have read on and on.

Yancey travels the world to share stories of loss and pain and the beat of faith that emerges through them. He suggests that nothing is beyond God’s redemption and sometimes it is in the crushing that we discover faith that really matters. Listening to people’s stories from around the world reminds me that God’s grace and goodness know no boundaries. He is at work in the most unlikely of circumstances and indeed, God is good.
Philip Yancey presents his ideas about spirituality in an extremely realistic and practical way. He examines the concept of God's goodness and the value of faith in the troubled times we live in and doesn't duck difficulty or bypass pain. Yancey is comfortable with ambiguity to avoid generalizing and giving advice not based on truth. As a committed Christian, there are doubts and concerns that are ever-present in my mind that a simple, "Christian" answer doesn't quite satisfy, and this book does address some of them. I love that Yancey challenges the way Christians think about the world without discounting the value of faith. This book is a must-read for Christians looking for insight, spiritual seekers, or even individuals who are curious about the tennents of the Christian faith. Yancey's style makes everything very understandable without being condescending or clichéd!. Encouragement and hope shine through!
