GoodBookStall Review:
In this book the Rt. Hon. Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead, political historian and churchman, publishes a collection of essays expanded from lectures and reviews on the lives of six people dear to his heart who shared the ideas and beliefs of English Idealism. They are Frederick and William Temple, both Archbishops of Canterbury and both dedicated social reformers; George Bell, Anglican priest who courageously spoke out against obliteration bombing during the war; Conrad Noel, Christian socialist known as “the red vicar”; Eleanor Rathbone, early feminist and social scientist who campaigned for family allowances; William Beveridge whose famous report on the Welfare State drastically changed his contemporaries’ attitude to social security. These are all good people, all different but all with a strong social conscience. Frank Field brings them very much alive, writing with honesty and conviction. The book is never dull and will be an inspiration to many.
