Peter Rollins is a clever chap – and clever enough to realise that he stands most chance of helping people to see his meaning if he tells stories, and uses accessible language. This book, which suggests that the core of Christian faith may lie in betrayal of the Church and Christian tradition, for the sake of new life and greater fidelity, is therefore extremely readable. It helps that Rollins’s thesis is hardly uncontroversial. His name on the cover is likely to attract a particular type of free thinking Christian who sees themes of subversion as endemic to the Gospel. It’s a good book, therefore – but not one for the easily rattled.
