GoodBookStall Review:
Many readers will know of the author's The Return of the Prodigal Son. This new book pre-dates the original by three years, being the edited material of a workshop that Henri Nouwen led for L'Arche Caregivers. A salient point is that he was recovering from a breakdown, and, as the editor writes, 'may be his best articulation of accepting himself as God's beloved son.' (p. viii).
The three original taped 'conferences' (which are available) have been edited 'in a way that gives Henri his authentic voice, captures his compelling testimony, [sic] and maps a way for each of us to an encounter of deep consequence.' (p. ix). There are nine chapters, divided into three main sections. Each chapter ends with suggestions for 'Listening', 'Journaling' and 'Communing' and 'A Wisdom Practice for Those on a Spiritual Journey'. The text is interspersed with appropriate quotations from Nouwen and other authors. The 'Prologue' is by Nouwen; the 'Epilogue' by the editorial team. Included is a separate card with Rembrandt's picture of the title - no need to continually have to flick back through the book.
Clearly, this is for a personal retreat, which could be spread over days or weeks. The parable and our own lives are connected: Nouwen found the healing and forgiving love of God, and wants us all to share that same experience. Because it is so personal, this may be his best legacy to us. His friends are to be congratulated for the care taken to share him with us.
