I can remember as a child going off with my brother and a friend, packs of sandwiches in our saddlebags, and cycling to as many of the surrounding Sussex villages we could reach in a day visiting the churches. That interest has stayed with me, and I am still visiting churches; if only we’d had a book like this to refer to! Of course not all our personal favourites are listed. How could they be? But Simon Jenkins has included many that will be within reach of the majority of people, and the information that he has collected together in this book, will enhance the enjoyment of visiting those churches and many others too. A weighty tome, more suitable for a car than a saddlebag, but one that will provide hours of pleasure to the armchair traveller as well as the intrepid explorer.
