GoodBookStall Review:
This is a book about the oppressed people of Burma – the Karen people –and their struggle against the brutal military regime. The title is ironic because it is a land steeped in evil, but it is also the translation of the old name for their country. What is happening today in Burma is not merely human rights violations nor ethnic cleansing but manifestations of pure evil. The book, written from a Christian perspective, details the atrocities inflicted on innocent people, but despite the catalogue of suffering it is a book full of dignity and courage and irrepressible hope. It is an angry book but also a compassionate one. It is a challenge to all of us who enjoy freedom. The message for me and for all who will read this book is “We can no longer plead ignorance. We cannot turn aside.”
