GoodBookStall Review:
Those who practice and study pastoral care in secondary schools, including parents, will find this a valuable and inspirational resource. Twenty chapters are divided into three sections, covering 'Humanistic', 'Programmatic' and 'Spiritual' pastoral care, providing, the editor hopes, 'a vision for schools to develop their approach' in meeting the pupils' needs holistically. While based within, and drawing upon, the Irish education system, and its Catholic background, educational personnel in Great Britain, with due adaptation, will appreciate the authors' findings and suggestions. Such areas as 'Bereavement Support', 'Collective Worship', 'Pupils' Perceptions and Experiences of School Chaplaincy', 'Religious Education as a State Examination' and 'Understanding the Pastoral Needs of asylum Seeking Pupils' illustrate the inter-national character of topics covered. While academic in tone, its content is accessible and straightforward, with useful notes and a comprehensive bibliography.
