There is many a hint of ‘Yes Minister’ but the subtlety of Frary’s wit varies. Vivid pictures of musty vestries and eccentric choristers are conjured up by humorous stories in which many a point is stretched. Frary writes of a world of amateur church choirs of which he has had half a century of experience. Nostalgia is being relished although perhaps there are still backwaters where these tales are still current. Resistance to change by choristers, organists, PCCs and clerics in collusion or opposition is observed by a diplomatic visitor, very observant of stereotypes and their habits. A book to be dipped into and enjoyed.
