Clare of Assisi; The Lady
Early Documents
by Regis J. Armstrong O.F.M. Cap.
GoodBookStall Review:
The second edition of this collection was published in 1993; why a new edition? Because it 'offers evidence of a greater sophistication in interpreting and presenting the texts emerging from this phenomenon...of Clare and her sisters in attempting to live the Gospel inspiration and originality of Francis of Assisi.' (p.33).
Clare's letters to Agnes of Prague, her 'Testament' and her 'Blessing', the Papal documents which informed and helped shape her 'Form of Life' (which, nevertheless, expresses her firm ideas and independence) precede biographical writings and the documents for her canonisation. A large number of 'Related Documents' are included. There are excellent introductions to the documents, as well as a general 'Introduction'. Translations read well. As would be expected, there is a full Bibliography and Index. A Concordance for three of the main biographical sources and a Scriptural Index are welcome. While a scholarly work, anyone interested in the development of the Franciscan charism will find this book informative and fascinating.
